Gulf Place provides a beautiful, walkable community and acts as the hub of activity for the west end of 30A. There is a sizable town center with all the restaurants and shops you could ask for. Pecan Jacks serves some boozy ice cream, and Sunrise Coffee has locally roasted caffeinated delights. Gulf Place also has the area’s largest public access beach, which makes Shunk Gulley an excellent stop for lunch on your way to a day at the beach. This area was designed with slowing things down in mind, so there are green spaces and park benches throughout for you to stop and take in the scenery. The streets are lined with palm trees for a classic Florida look. Much of the community is connected with walking and bike trails, so you rarely need a car. Vibrant activity that leaves room for cuddling under a blanket makes Gulf Place more than worth a visit.

Shunk Gulley: Fishing has always been a part of the local economy. The Shunk family are long-time local fishermen and identified the area near what is now the Ed Walline Beach Access as one of their favorite fishing spots. While the name tells the story of the location, they also partnered with the South Walton Artificial Reef Association to preserve the natural beauty and ecosystems of the coastline. Shunk Gulley is more than just a reflection of the area’s history; they also serve up a good time. Known as an oyster bar, you can, of course, expect great oysters, but they also serve all variety of seafood and casual fare. I consider myself somewhat of a smoked tuna dip aficionado, and Shunk Gulley’s serves one of my favorites! You will find daily live music to go with excellent coastal views and southern hospitality.

If you feel like staying close to home, Gulf Place has an array of local dining and shopping options within walking distance. Breakfast & Brunch: Praise the Lard for the Perfect Pig. The quiche is divine, but the Parmesean Crusted Breakfast Sandwich is the ultimate morning indulgence. If you are in a hurry, pop into Sunrise Coffee for an iced coffee and one of Charlie’s donuts or their breakfast biscuits. Lunch: Need to feed a crowd? Pizza By The Sea serves up pizza, sandwiches, and pasta, the whole family will enjoy. Supper and Snacks: You can enjoy a cocktail and watch the sunset on the second-floor patio at Shunk Gulley. There is also plenty of TVs so you can watch the big game and listen to the waves crash at the same time. Roll Tide 😉 Walk over to Pecan Jacks and indulge in a gourmet sweet-lovers a line of ice cream that reinvents the old classics like Banana Pudding and Peach Cobbler as well as adult flavors like Kahlua Espresso and Cherry Amaretto.
